"Gloria!" Guy called out, stepping through her front door.

She didn’t take long and was soon coming down the steps. She had just gotten back from NY a day ago, and already was packing to go back for good.

"Hello, Guy. I’m glad to see you up and around," she remarked.

Guy was using a straight black cane with a gold knob instead of the wheelchair.

"You know what I always say, you can’t keep a good man down," Guy quipped.

The room grew quiet. Gloria studied Guy and felt her resolve for leaving weakening. Seeing him in the flesh wasn’t like seeing him in her mind. But she knew she had to be strong.

"What do you want, Guy?"

"I wanted to see you. You said you were back from New York, so I thought I’d stop by. I mean, if you didn’t want me to know you were back, why’d you call me to tell me so?"

"Force of habit," she shot back.

Gloria was so used to checkin in with Guy, it had become an old habit, one she was determined to break.

Guy moved closer to her.

"Force of habit? You tryin’ to tell me my baby don’t wanna see me? I damn sure wanna see my baby," he crooned, sliding his arm around her waist.

Gloria slipped out of his embrace and moved away.

"Yeah well, I’m lookin’ nothin’ like Debra," she stated bluntly.

"That ain’t never stopped you before," he shot back.

"Believe me, that’s about to change. A lot of things about to change," Gloria told him.

Guy nodded, then changed the subject.

"So…how was New York?"

"Don’t beat around the bush, Guy. You know what you really want to know is, did I tell Tito about Eddie because I was upset about Kev? Isn’t that what you wanna know?"

"After all this time, if you did, you gonna look like you was in on it."

"Well maybe I wanna wipe the slate clean."

"So you told him?" Guy asked casually, but inside he was taut with tension.

"What’s the matter, Guy? Scared of the consequences?" Gloria quipped.

"Are you?" Guy retorted.

"I’ve been suffering the consequences for a long time, Guy. Ain’t no fear left in me," she replied sourly. "I’m moving back to New York."

"When?" he paused. "Why?"

"As soon as I’m packed…and why not? There’s nothing for me here. Kev’s gone and once again you’ve put another woman’s needs before mine," Gloria accused.

"Glo, listen, it’s not about another woman’s needs okay? It’s about-"

She held up her hand.

"It doesn’t even mater at this point. It’s over, Guy."

"Over? I mean, we been divorced," Guy remarked not fully catching her meaning.

"Come on, Guy. You and I both know the divorce was only on paper…just like our marriage," she replied sadly.

Guy took her hand gently.

"Our marriage wasn’t just on paper. I love you, Glo" he told her sincerely.

She pulled her hand away.

"I finally know, Guy. At first I divorced you because I figured it wouldn’t hurt as much, you know? I thought it would be easier if I was the other woman. All that would be Debra’s problem." Gloria shook her head.
